After Merck agreed to pay a $650 million plus record fine, the company issued the following statement:
"Merck believes its pricing and sales and marketing policies and practices were consistent with all applicable regulations and contracts during the relevant time. "
Translation: "We're innocent."
And Merck doesn't stop there. Merck was also forced to enter into a corporate integrity agreement with the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
That's what happens to companies gone bad.
In an attempt to make it sound as if Merck didn't really need the agreement the company writes, "This agreement incorporates the Company's existing comprehensive compliance program, which was substantially enhanced in 2001, governing its pharmaceutical sales and marketing activities in the United States."
