Can’t smell that foul odor? You may be developing dementia.

Inability to smell is an early warning sign for development of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Now two doctors have developed a Sniff Magnitude Test, with the help of a $1.3 million grant from the NIH.

The patient takes a whiff of pleasant and unpleasant fragrances, and the machine measures how much the patient inhales. Bad smells result in a very small inhalation, simple as that.

Bad smell may also explain why some people are less afraid of tasting unfamiliar food. So next time you observe someone eating something gross - recommend a doctor's visit.
